Malaysian insect meal maker breaks into EU pet market

Nutrition Technologies, an insect-based protein ingredients manufacturer operating in Malaysia and Singapore, is in the process of exporting its insect meal to the European Union (EU), the first company from Malaysia to make the cut.

In 2022, Malaysia, along with Canada, Switzerland, United Kingdom and South Korea, became eligible to export insects and insect-based products to the EU. The Malaysian Ministry of Agriculture then approved Nutrition Technologies to send its insect meal and oil as feed ingredient for aquafeed, livestock and pet food to the single European market and the UK.

Sundown Products has expanded its range of animal bedding into domestic poultry and pet cats, with two new products — Egg-e-bed, and Kitt-e-litter — and announced an addition to its sales team with the appointment of Diane Lloyd as area sales manager covering the northern region of England.

The two new products have been designed specifically for the pet market. Egg-e-bed is a finely-chopped wheat straw bedding for home-kept chickens, ducks, and other domestic poultry, available as a 19kg plastic-wrapped bale. Premiumization: Healthy for the pet food market long term?

For the ongoing health of the industry, should pet food manufacturers and pet retailers pull back from the common, long-held strategy of focusing mainly on superpremium products and their purchasers?

That’s a concept posed by Bryan Jaffe, managing director, and John Gulvezan, vice president, of Cascadia Capital, an investment firm that closely tracks the pet industry. In their “Pet Industry Overview, Spring 2023” report, they wrote about what they see as a trend toward the industry bifurcating into two markets: superpremium and economy, “with affluent pet owner spend offsetting declining ownership and lower spend from median pet owners. ”
